It always amazes me when my children are able to quote television commercials verbatim, but if you ask why they didn’t clean their rooms, they can’t manage to put a sentence together. Walking past the living room one day, I overheard my three year old singing the jingle for, “Pillow Pets,” along with the commercial. Intrigued, I stopped to watch.
What is a Pillow Pet?
A pillow pet is basically a pillow made to look like an animal. When the pillow is folded, it can be hooked together by a Velcro tab to make the pet appear to be standing on four legs. The animals are very soft and are made of cloth materials that simulate real animal fur.
How are pillow pets used?
These pillows can be used as a regular bed pillow, a napping comfort, or a play toy. Since the pillows can be folded, they are quite portable and can fit into a pillow case for transport to slumber parties or a weekend at grandma’s house. Some children have even chosen to trade Pillow Pets to try out more varieties!
How to wash and care for your pet
Pillows can be washed right in your washing machine and no special cleaning processes are required. In order to keep your Pillow Pet soft and cuddly, consider using a gentle detergent such as Woolite. If the pets are used by young children, be wary of contact allergies that could develop by using a regular washing detergent.
How can I order a Pillow Pet?
These toys can be ordered online by visiting the official site of Pillow Pets. Be aware that there are a number of knock-off vendors, so choose sites that sell the official Pillow Pet merchandise. If your children are like mine, they will be able to spot a knock-off a mile away. These pets can also be purchased at local pharmacies or discount stores that offer, “As Seen on TV,” sections.
How much do they cost?
Pillow Pets can be purchased online for $19.95 plus shipping and handling, as of January, 2011. The official website offers a discount for purchasing more than one, and buyers can save an addition $4.00 a piece by placing multiple orders. If purchased in stores, the price can vary, depending on demand in your area.
Are they worth the price?
If you would ask my son if he loves his Pillow Pet, he will definitely give you a resounding, “Yes!” He sleeps with his Pillow Pet every night and asks for it when he wakes in the morning. His pet came as a gift from a sitter, and he absolutely loves it! It’s worth the money, for sure.
Who should not purchase these pillows?
Anyone who is purchasing gifts for children under the age of three should refrain from buying this product. The eyes may be pulled apart and could pose a choking hazard. Infants who are less than a year old should never be given pillows in their cribs as this has been linked to suffocation and death. Finally, anyone allergic to synthetic materials is advised to choose another more suitable purchase.
